Deep Relaxation Techniques for the Body, Muscles & Nervous System
ADRIANA BARRI SPECIALIST IN REBOZO TECHNIQUES AND REBOZOS
Introduction
Rebozos have been a part of my life since I was a child. They are deeply rooted in my culture, used both in significant life events and everyday activities. I am committed to exploring and sharing the wide-ranging applications and benefits of the rebozo. Its versatility makes it an effective tool for physical support, nervous system regulation, and therapeutic use across various contexts. The care, love, and support that a rebozo provides are truly exceptional.
Rebozo techniques are a gentle, natural method that is highly effective and offers both physical and emotional benefits, with a significant impact on the nervous system and sensory co-regulation. A rebozo can bring calm, well-being, and presence into daily life, helping to deeply relax the muscles and release tension in the body. It also provides support to pregnant women, children, and adults of all genders—consistently achieving remarkable results.
The rebozo is a traditional Mexican shawl that has been used for centuries for many different purposes. Rebozo techniques are originally developed by traditional Mexican midwives and have been used during pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond.
In this workshop, I will teach rebozo techniques that promote deep relaxation of the body through rhythmic movements and gentle vibrations. These movements activate the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging a state of calm and creating a sense of safety in the body. This method is highly effective in reducing stress, anxiety, pain, and muscle tension—the massage can reach deep layers of the body that hands alone cannot access. Rebozo work is also beneficial for those experiencing back pain, sleep difficulties, a disconnect between body and mind, or overthinking. It is a powerful tool not only for pregnant women but also for children, teenagers, and adults managing anxiety, stress, and overall well-being.
All these techniques support a wide range of professionals—those supporting pregnancy and postpartum, as well as those providing physical and psychological treatments. This makes the techniques relevant for many professionals, including midwives, doulas, gyobs, physiotherapists, massage therapists, healthcare practitioners, holistic therapists and stress and anxiety therapists.
The techniques shared in the workshop are designed to inspire participants to integrate rebozo into their practice. My teacher and inspiration is Guadalupe Trueba, a renowned and passionate Mexican midwife and doula with 50 years of experience, who has learned from many different traditional midwives across Mexico.
The workshops combine cultural knowledge, theory, and hands-on practice, ensuring participants are ready to use the techniques immediately. You will work in pairs, both performing and receiving the techniques, allowing you to fully experience their effects in your own body.
Proper technique is essential, not only to maximize the benefits of rebozo massage but also to ensure that practitioners take care of their own bodies while performing the techniques.
Teacher – Adriana Barri
Adriana is mexican and has lived in Copenhagen since 2012. She started Rebozo Copenhagen after being inspired by her first pregnancy in 2014, when her midwife recommended it to her to relieve back, rib and pelvic pain. It was pure magic! It was the only way she could sleep at night and it also allowed her partner to participate in the process.
As rebozo originates from Mexico, she decided to support Mexican families in the local community by bringing authentic rebozos to Denmark. These rebozos are handwoven by skilled artisans and carry a rich tradition through many generations.
Adriana became an expert in rebozo techniques and found joy in sharing the rich cultural background and amazing techniques that can improve a pregnant woman’s well-being and help her through a more comfortable and easier labor. The techniques also help after birth, where the new mother is the focus of the treatment and can find peace and stability.
Since 2019, she has dedicated to teaching midwives, doulas, birth attendants, bodywork therapists, physiotherapists, massage therapists and expectant parents, rebozo techniques to support women before, during and after pregnancy. She teaches different techniques that can be used at all stages and help you find the optimal position for your body while protecting yourself during the treatment.
Her dream is to spread the uses of rebozo and raise awareness of rebozo techniques to even more professionals working with pregnant women, children and adults, where these techniques can be used as a form of relaxation and wellness. At the same time, she wants to support the Mexican artisans who handwoven this beautiful tool, making it possible to perform rebozo massage on others.
Adriana is the mother of two children, Emma, born in 2014, and Oscar, born in 2017. Her home is in Copenhagen, where she continues to share her passion for rebozo techniques with others.
